2nd, 2001 - Almond labour union and management reach settlement!
Thai Labour Campaign is delighted to report
that after almost a year of struggle, the Almond labour
union is finally receiving justice! An agreement
has been reached with management providing for the reinstatement
of 40 fired workers, dropping of all company lawsuits against
the union and other organizations and for contract negotiations
within three days of workers submitting demands. An agreement
was reached through negotiation between Fred Higgs, General
Secretary of the International Federation of Chemical, Energy,
Mine and General Workers' Unions (ICEM), representing Almond
Labour Union, and Jonathan Mandelbaum, the employer.

| Throughout their year long struggle,
Almond workers met in front of the factory to sing and
chant songs of solidarity. |
The workers of Almond Labour Union should
be congratulated for their incredible strength and determination
in a very lengthy struggle. The resolution of the dispute
could not have been possible without the tremendous solidarity
and support of ICEM. Thai Labour Campaign and Almond would
like to expresses gratitude toward the Solidarity Center,
the AFL-CIO, the UAW, Campaign for Labor Rights and the
many local organizations and individuals who took action
in support of Almond, especially activists in New York City.
Following contract negotiations and the implementation
of the agreement between management and the union, Thai
Labour Campaign will end its campaign on behalf of the Almond
Labour Union and make no further appeals for solidarity
actions regarding this particular dispute.
