Press Release - THAI
DURABLE WORKERS - July 20, 2000
March in Solidarity with Assembly of the Poor to Protest Brutality
On 20 July at 11 o'clock, 300 workers, mostly from
Thai Durable Textile (Thai Krieng), marched from the Democracy
Monument to join the Assembly of the Poor demonstration at the
Government House, for solidarity support to those 220 villagers
who had been beaten up and arrested. The workers from Thai Durable
faced similar violence at the hand of their employer who engaged
over 100 hooligans (they believe that most of them are soldiers)
to beat up the women workers on 15th and 22nd of June.
1,500 workers from Thai Durable Textiles workers
have been on strike since May 31 but the company refuses to negotiate
with the workers. The company has now announced the dismissal
of 390 workers. The Minister of Ministry of Labour and Social
Welfare claimed that he has no authority to order the company
to negotiate with the workers.
A statement was read at the rally demanding that
the Thai government release those 220 villagers arrested unconditionally,
to follow the recommendation of the committee and to pressure
the company to settle the dispute with the workers.
The Assembly of the Poor welcomed the Thai Durable
workers with 'Bai See Su Khan' (a welcoming ceremony of their
spirit, which is a traditional ceremony of Northeast people) and
gave a sack of rice to the workers stating that the poor have
to help each other.
