Thailand's
economic crisis of 1997 brought massive layoffs in the private
sector and soaring unemployment. Lingering effects and a slow
recovery from the crisis, coupled with economic "recovery"
measures which have favored a flexible labour system and low
and decentralized wages, has meant that workers are facing
a dire situation.

for Improved Labour Policies |

For many Thai workers, the realities
of the global economy have meant increasing informalisation
of labour, and reduced job security. In one recent effort
to combat these trends, since April of 2001, a growing movement
in Thailand has been campaigning
for improved labour policies from the government. Workers
are pushing for higher minimum
wages, increased social security, unemployment insurance and
a better labour relations law.
Public and Private Enterprise Unions
have come together to support this
effort, with the Electricity Generating Authority State Enterprise
Labour Union of Thailand and the Center for Labour Informaiton
Service and Training providing key coordination roles. Recently,
workers have been joined in their push by the Student Federation
of Thailand as well as democracy groups and organizations
representing the urban poor.
