| The Thai Labour Solidarity Committee assists workers affected by the Tsunami
Mr. Sripo Wayupak, the president of the Thai Labour Solidarity
Committee (TLSC) said that the TLSC, which comprises of
26 labour organizations including trade unions, labour federations
and congresses and NGOs, is receiving donations from its
members and the public to help affected workers from the
Tsunami in Thailand’s six southern provinces. The
TLSC is working with the Phuket Federation of Hotel and
Service Labour (PHSL) in surveying the number of workers
who need help.
On 13 – 14 January 2005 Mr.Sripo together with Mr.
Stefan Chrobot and Mr.Sakdina Chatrakul Na Ayudhaya of the
Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung met with trade unions in Phuket
coordination of the PHSL. They visited areas destroyed by
the December 26 Tsunami in Phuket and Pang-Nga.
After visiting the affected areas, they had a discussion
and set up the Mobile Assistance Centre (MAC) in Phuket
to assist affected workers. Also, the team was set up to
survey the number of deaths, injured and unemployed with
the objective of coordinating with government and private
agencies to offer long-term assistance.
