Mr. Sripo Wayupak, the president of the Thai Labour Solidarity Committee (TLSC) said that the TLSC, which comprises of 26 labour organizations including trade unions, labour federations and congresses and NGOs, is receiving donations from its members and the public to help affected workers from the Tsunami in Thailand’s six southern provinces. The TLSC is working with the Phuket Federation of Hotel and Service Labour (PHSL) in surveying the number of workers who need help.

On 13 – 14 January 2005 Mr.Sripo together with Mr. Stefan Chrobot and Mr.Sakdina Chatrakul Na Ayudhaya of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung met with trade unions in Phuket coordination of the PHSL. They visited areas destroyed by the December 26 Tsunami in Phuket and Pang-Nga.

After visiting the affected areas, they had a discussion and set up the Mobile Assistance Centre (MAC) in Phuket to assist affected workers. Also, the team was set up to survey the number of deaths, injured and unemployed with the objective of coordinating with government and private agencies to offer long-term assistance.
